The 1880-CC Morgan dollar is relatively available in Mint State due to the release of thousands as part of the GSA hoard in the 1970s and 1980s. Several different varieties are known of this issue, exhibiting repunching of the date and changes to the reverse design. The vast majority are in grades of MS-63 and MS-64, but even Gem MS-65 examples can be acquired for less than $1,000 in today’s market. However, this availability dramatically changes at the Superb Gem level, where just a handful is known.
We are delighted to offer one of these elusive Superb Gem examples in lot 1099 of our Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction. This particular piece is among the very finest examples in existence, tied with just two others at the top of the PCGS Population Report. A representative of the 8 Over High 7 repunched date variety, it is certified MS-67+ by PCGS and approved by CAC with a green sticker. It is pristine and incredibly lustrous with a subtle prooflike reflectivity visible across both sides. This example represents the very pinnacle of quality available for the issue and it is sure to attract significant attention from advanced collectors and PCGS Registry Set participants.
This Superb Gem 1880-CC dollar will be featured in lot 1099 of the Rarities Night session of our Official Auction of the Whitman Coins & Collectibles Spring Expo.
