Description:

Formidable in rarity with a mintage that remains unknown although today experts believe that as many as 60 exist in all Proof grades. This is one of the very finest to survive and tied with the best seen by PCGS. Furthermore, this was graded during the "green label" historical period of PCGS and their grading evolution, and thus certified prior to the time that Cameo designations were differentiated on Proof coinage. There is good contrast between the frosted devices and mirror fields, so the Cameo designation would likely be awarded if this coin was resubmitted by today's standards. As it stands now, this phenomenal Gem Proof is tied with two others at most as the finest seen in the Proof category. For reference there are four Cameo Proofs of this date certified at this level but none finer in the PCGS Population Report.

No signs of carbon specks or spotting are present, and the color is stark white overall without more than a hint of toning. Furthermore the strike is bold on all the intricate devices which stand tall against the mirror reflectivity of the fields. Matching the minutia to the known diagnostics provides a perfect match, with the slightly filled lower portion of the E in UNITED from incomplete die polish, and the center ray below the second T of STATES is very thin, caused by die polishing. The leaf below RU of TRUST is detached from the group at its base. These confirm the Proof status of this rare piece, although any experienced numismatist could sort this out at a glance as the appearance in unquestionable and its Gem status is assured given the high quality. Formidable in rarity and desirability, and worthy of the most advanced numismatic cabinet.
