Superb Cameo Proof 1886 Half Eagle Debuts in Our March 2014 Baltimore Auction Extravaganza — First Auction Appearance Ever

Just when you think there are no more “fresh” coins coming into the numismatic marketplace, a stunning Proof 1886 half eagle from the James A. Stack Collection makes its first appearance in the auction arena. One of just 72 examples of the date and denomination struck in the Proof format, it is thought that as few as 30 pieces can be accounted for today. Of the survivors, the present PCGS-certified specimen is the finest Proof of the date given a Cameo designation by PCGS; it stands alone in the Population Report.

The collections of James A. Stack were sold over the years by Stack’s, but the present Gem Proof missed out on those sales  it was given by Mr. James A. Stack to a member of his family, and was out of the numismatic marketplace for decades until it showed up at a dealer’s office just recently. The dealer made an offer  who could resist such a beauty  and the deal was done. You can’t get any “fresher” than that!

If Proof gold coins are your passion, you have no doubt been a long-time customer of ours. We suspect this Gem Proof 1886 half eagle has already captured your imagination, and you will be in good company when the bidding begins on this magnificent survivor.  If you’ve bid in our sales before, you know obtaining this rare beauty will not be easy. If you have yet to join us in one of our numerous sales, we welcome you as a bidder and we wish you luck, particularly if this “fresh” Gem Proof 1886 half eagle is in your sights.
