The Marc Cohen Collection

Did you know Stack’s Bowers Galleries is featuring the
Marc Cohen Collection in our official auction of the Whitman Coin and
Collectibles Winter Expo, October 24-26, 2018, in Baltimore Maryland?  This collection includes high grade type
coins from some of the most popular series of the 19th and 20th
centuries, accompanied by an impressive offering of paper money.  To learn more about Marc D. Cohen, continue
reading:

Marc D. Cohen’s interest in numismatics began as a
young boy in the 1950s. The son of a rabbi, his collection started with Israeli
proof sets and currency, along with proof and special mint sets from the United
States. A member of the American Numismatic Association from 1969 until his
passing in 2004, Cohen’s passion for collecting developed through his college
years and included regular trips to the ANA’s World’s Fair of Money. In the
early 1980s he initiated his collection of United States currency. As Cohen built
his collection, he connected with Larry Hanks and Lee Madore of Hanks &
Associates in the 1990s and with their guidance found jewels for his
collection. He worked to find the last pieces of his want list right up until
his passing, leaving only an 1869 $2 “Rainbow” – Fr. No. 42 missing from his
collection.

For Cohen, who was a securities analyst in metals and
mining, collecting was as much about exploring themes as it was about acquiring
what made him happy. Every piece in his collection was thoughtfully researched
and calculated, an element of his work life that transferred into his collecting.
At times, Cohen sought out pieces to build certain type sets, while at other
times he made purchases based solely on the uniqueness or singularity of a
piece. His passion for his work in metals and mining also transferred to the
notes he collected, as he sought out a diverse array of Large and Small Size
Silver Certificates, with the latter being one of his favorite types, along
with Red Seal United States Notes.

Cohen’s collection is a testament to his love of
American history and the important role that paper money has played in the
nation. He took great pride and joy in his collection, regularly spending hours
going through each and every piece, especially with his three children. His
other great joys included baseball and classic films, especially those
featuring John Wayne.

His family
hopes that those who purchase the coins and paper money from Mr. Cohen’s
collection will cherish them as he did.
