A Gem of 20th Century Canadian Silver Coinage

When foreign coins are presented at our gallery, it is usually an accumulation of circulated leftover change from past vacations abroad. But sometimes a foreign coin collection consisting of gold and silver coins that are worth decent money is brought in.

Not long ago a family came into the gallery and wanted to sell off the coin collection they had inherited. As metal values are at an all-time high, they figured it was time to let the coins go to take advantage of these high precious metal prices. After sorting through the collection, from the accumulation of 80% Canadian silver coinage, one gem was pulled out: the 1948 Canadian silver dollar, the rarest of all the Canadian dollars minted between 1935 to 1967.

The 1948 Canadian dollar features King George VI on the obverse of the coin and the Voyageur, date, and denomination on the reverse. In 1948 the Canadian Royal Mint did not have the dies with the modified legend of “GEORGIVUS VI DEI GRATIA REX” ready until the middle of the year. Due to the late production of this dollar in 1948, only 18,780 were minted (including a limited number of specimens), making this the rarest date in the silver dollar series. This coin was set aside and has been consigned to our May 2024 World Collector Choice Online Auction.

It only takes one piece to make an accumulation of foreign coins valuable and worth your visit to our gallery.
