A Wonderful Mint State Hupeh Tael to Highlight October Hong Kong Rarities Night Session

One of the fabulous rarities scheduled to cross the block in our October Hong Kong Rarities Night Auction is a nearly Choice Mint State Hupeh Tael from Year 30 (1904).

The Tael coinage was introduced as part of a coinage reform program, based on the traditional Chinese weight standard, not the Dollar system. In all, 648,000 Taels were originally struck. However, having two different series of coins based on different systems in circulation proved complicated for the general populace, and so the reform was abandoned.

A rarity in such a lofty state of preservation, this Small Characters variety is graded MS-62 by NGC. It is distinctly lustrous and has a bright original brilliance that highlights the delicate golden-plum iridescent hues that dust the shimmering silvery surfaces. NGC has graded only 15 in MS-62 with fewer than two dozen higher. A prize for the specialist of classic Chinese rarities, we have no doubt that this exceptional quality coin will attract very spirited bidding when it crosses the block!

The consignment deadline for the October Hong Kong auction has passed, but we are still accepting consignments for our January 2024 New York International Numismatic Convention Auction.
