1902 Morgan Dollar

1902 Morgan Dollar

1902 Morgan Dollar

Circulation Mintage: 7,994,000
Obverse Text: 1902 | LIBERTY | E PLURIBUS UNUM
Reverse Text: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA | ONE DOLLAR | IN GOD WE TRUST

Guidelines for Collecting:

The 1902 Philadelphia Mint dollar was the first issue to employ the C-4 reverse hub on all dies. The circulation strike quality is usually above average, but the feather detail is not as sharp as on coins struck in earlier years. The luster ranges from satiny to dull.

Availability in Circulated Grades:

EF and AU can be located with not much trouble.

Availability in Mint State Grades:

Plentiful in most grades right up to the gem category. The strike on this date can be dismal, so look for plenty of hair details above Liberty’s ear. The reverse is soft from the use of the new reverse with lighter feather details. MS-64 is an ideal grade for this date.

Availability in Proof:

Proofs of the date are mostly reflective, the result of excessive polishing at the Mint. Cameo contrast is nearly non-existent for this date and any attractive Proof with even a modicum of cameo contrast and good eye appeal is a prize. Liberty’s details can be shallow, so look for strength in the devices.
