Mexico 1969 Proposed and Adopted Design for the 1970-83 Morelos 1 Peso

Now that our annual Spring Hong Kong auction has concluded, we turn our attention to the May Collectors Choice Online Auction of Ancient and World Coins. Among the wide range of numismatic treasures featured is lot 34415 – a Mexico 1969 Pattern Peso.

According to Paublo Luna Herrera, author of “Las Pruebas de la Moneda Mexicana del Siglo XX,” the 1968 Olympic games held in Mexico saw many foreign coins that entered circulation. This caused the 1967 1 Peso issues to become scarce and prompted the authorization of the Morelos 1 Peso. As is typical with new coin issues, proposed designs were submitted for review a few months before the end of 1969. This new design would be adopted and utilized from 1970 through 1983, struck in copper-nickel and becoming the first 1 Peso coins of a metallic composition without silver. Mr. Herrera states that there is a mintage of only 28 pieces for these pattern issues.

This lot as well as the rest of our May 2024 CCO Auction of Ancient and World Coins can be viewed on our website www.stacksbowers.com.
