Already Stack’s Bowers Galleries has assembled an impressive assortment of consignments representing some of the most popular and desirable notes ever issued by the United States. Included is a major rarity among National Bank Notes, a 1902 $100 Red Seal from the First National Bank of Auburn, Nebraska (Charter #3343).
Printed from 1902 to 1908, Red Seal National Bank Notes are scarce in any condition. With the bulk of known survivors representing the $5, $10, and $20 denominations, $50s and $100s are virtually unseen outside of the most advanced collections. The featured note looks like it could headline a Hickman-Oakes sale during the 1970s and represents one of just four notes of its type and denomination recorded on the state as a whole. Seldom encountered, only a small handful have come to auction in recent years. The fact that this is a replacement with only two notes recorded against the entire surviving population of 1902 $100 Red Seals adds additional desirability. This example retains vivid penned signatures from Cashier W.H. Hay and President Frederick E. Allen, a trait lost upon many Nationals due circulation or a poor choice of ink. The title block (also used by the First National Bank of Auburn, Maine – Charter# 154) likewise stands out compared to the relatively generic title blocks that became the norm with the Series of 1902.
This is a significant opportunity for both Friedberg-focused collectors and the group seeking elite-level Nationals. This note should attract its fair share of attention even before it crosses the auction block in August.
