One lot features a Provincial Act of May 3rd, 1775, 9 Pound 6% Interest Bearing Loan Certificate due June 1, 1777, from Anderson, Massachusetts and graded by PCGS Very Fine 35 PPQ. These Loan Certificates provided the first financing for the American Revolution, preceding Continental Currency by less than two months. The craftsmanship of this note was exemplary, fashioned by none other than Paul Revere himself. The note is available in Lot 1 and carries an estimate of $12,000 to $14,000.
Lot 3 features arguably one of the most special colonial notes that will ever be available at auction. This August 18, 1775, 6 Shillings Revere Sword in Hand Note is tied for the finest ever graded from All Four Enactments! Shown is a Revere-engraved patriot with a sword holding the Magna Charta with writing framing the portrait reading “Issued in defence of American Liberty.” This is a must have note for anyone who is on the quest to acquire the most special colonial notes, as this is an incredible survivor engraved by one of the most historic Americans. This note carries a conservative estimate of $50,000 to $100,000 and is expected to garner an extreme amount of attention at auction.
Additional interesting notes available in our Rarities Auction are Lots 14 and 15, two $1 Plymouth, Massachusetts Obsolete Notes from 1847 and 1853. Lot 14 is a signed Remainder with vignettes of the Mayflower in the harbor. The other note is a $1 Plymouth Banknote featuring the Plymouth Landing vignette adapted from the Henry Sargent painting. Both notes are affordable, but rare pieces of history expected to hammer in the four-figure range.
