Lovers of Russian coinage likely know of the Novodel restrikes that were produced throughout the centuries by Russian mints. They are among the most popular examples in the Russian series, and command some of the most premium pieces. In the February Collectors Choice Online auction, Stack’s Bowers Galleries is thrilled to present a 1654 Ruble Novodel. The original 1654 Ruble was the first western style crown produced by Russia.
Russia, though inhabited since humans lived in Europe, does not really have a history as a unified political entity like other European nations such as France and England, whose cultural lineages go back to the fall of the Roman Empire. Russia in a modern recognizable sense evolved from the Tsardom of Russia in a gradual process until the Russian Empire was declared in 1721. The 17th century in Russia saw the first standardized coinage issued in the region, and the popularity of the piece led the Moscow mint to produce Novodel restrikes of the type. Lot 75276 in our February Collectors Choice Online auction provides a lovely example graded AU-50. This wonderful piece, along with over 2,500 other exceptional World and Ancient coins are available for viewing and bidding at StacksBowers.com.
