This week we will look at some of the neat collector coins coming up in our December 5 Collectors Choice Online Auction, which focuses exclusively on Bust and Seated coinage. In total, 227 lots ranging from Capped Bust half dimes to trade dollars will be on offer.
To start the sale, lot 90001 is a near-Gem 1830 Capped Bust half dime, graded PCGS MS-64 and approved by CAC. Boasting frosty luster and delicate golden toning at the peripheries, this is a wonderful candidate for any type set. A classic key date Seated Liberty half dime, the 1846 had a mintage of only 27,000 and is highly desirable in all grades. Lot 90006 offers one in PCGS VG-10 that is thoroughly wholesome and will delight any collector.
Proving we have something for everyone, lot 90012 is a lowball Registry Set candidate, an example from the first year of John Reich’s Capped Bust dime series. While graded Fair-2 by PCGS, this coin shows a bold date and eagle. Only 51,065 were struck from a single die pair which is rated R-3+. PCGS CoinFacts estimates only 200 survive in all grades.
Lot 90034 presents an 1872-CC dime that saw extensive, honest wear in Wild West circulation. The mintage of 35,480 went right into circulation and even low grade survivors are rare, with only 200 estimated to survive in all grades.
A circulated rarity, the 1884 quarter had a mintage of only 8,000 but the population in circulated grades is actually lower than those graded Mint State. Lot 90064 is a pleasing mid-grade example graded VF-30 by PCGS.
The finest known 1836 O-123 half dollar is offered in lot 90076. Graded MS-65 by PCGS and awarded a green sticker by CAC, this richly toned and satiny lustrous Gem also offers fantastic eye appeal and will be a great attraction for any type or date collector. The 1870-CC half dollar is always popular, as it represents the first year of operations at this mint. Lot 90128 is housed in a PCGS VG Details holder. While cleaned ages ago, the eye appeal for this extensively worn example is quite pleasing and is an opportunity to acquire an affordable specimen.
Lot 90164 is a generally pleasing 1799 Draped Bust dollar, graded VF-35 by NGC. This is a wonderful mid-grade piece for a type set or set of early dollars. This sale offers three 1840 silver dollars including lot 90170, an NGC EF-40 example of the OC-4 die marriage, which is considered to be Rarity-6.
