We are pleased to
highlight lot 30006 in our August World Paper Money auction, at the World’s
Fair of Money in Anaheim. The lot presents a large brown hardbound leather book
containing a variety of Specimens from various South American countries. The
printers of the pieces in the book include American Bank Note Company, Waterlow
& Sons, and Bradbury Wilkinson. The book also has a few pages with a
variety of vignettes and motifs that were used by the mentioned printers in
their designs. All of the specimens are mounted onto thicker card stock pages.
The Specimens each
contain punch cancellations at their signature panels and red specimen serial
numbers and overprints. Over 100 Specimen pieces are seen in addition to over
40 vignettes.
The items include a page
with a trio of 100, 500, and 1000 Sucres from the Banco Internacional in
Guayaquil, Ecuador. Each note is larger than average with the notes increasing
in size with the denominations. A couple of rare Specimens from Barranquilla,
Colombia are also seen in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Pesos.
Another interesting set
contained in the book is P-S121- S126, 1 to 100 Pesos from Guatemala’s Banco
Colombiano. These notes all have the entire salvage still attached which is
incredible rare, especially fully in tact. Among the more striking pieces is
the 100 Mil Reis Specimen from the Bank of Brazil displaying a vignette of a
train at center and an allegorical woman at right. A man is seen at left with
arrows in his body, leaning up against the tree, perhaps one of the most
graphic images you will find on a banknote. We are privileged to be offering
this book, and do not believe another like it will appear in the near future.
