Presented in the Rarities Night session of our November 2024 Showcase Auction, we are pleased to offer lot 3085, the legendary 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar. It is one of only five examples known, is the rarest coin struck by the Charlotte Mint, and is the rarest issue in the United States Mint’s circulating gold dollar series. The significance and desirability of the 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar rivals all numismatic rarities in existence. Indeed, the unknown origins of the 1849-C Open Wreath and the fact that it was unpublished in the numismatic market prior to the mid-1940s have contributed to its aura as a legendary, yet enigmatic issue.
The example offered in our November sale has been off the market as part of the “Delaware Collection” since 1978 and is making its first known auction appearance pedigreed to the Darrel O. Neidigh Jr. Collection. Graded PCGS EF-45 and approved by CMQ the piece presents very well for having seen light commercial use. The surfaces are attractively original with soft olive undertones supporting dominant golden honey color. This is the first auction appearance for an 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar since 2016 – what could very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity for this generation of advanced numismatists. It is a leading highlight of this sale and will be a treasured highlight in another world-class cabinet.
