As the sole Proof-only issue in the series, the 1895 has long enjoyed near-legendary status. Every collector seeking to assemble a complete date set of Morgan dollars must acquire a Proof for the 1895, explaining the incredible demand in today’s market. For years, numismatic references listed a mintage of 12,000 circulation strikes for the Philadelphia Mint. Modern numismatic scholarship, however, suggests that the reported mintage represents a bookkeeping adjustment by the Mint to account for a final delivery of 1894-dated silver dollars.
We are thrilled to offer an incredible Proof-63+ Deep Cameo (PCGS) example in our November 2020 Auction, presented as part of the Monterrey Collection of U.S. Type Coins. Intense satiny luster blankets the central elements displaying significant contrast against the reflective fields. The surfaces are largely pearlescent and brilliant, accented by subtle hints of gold concentrated at the borders. Well struck and delightful, here is a truly majestic example of this "King of the Morgan Dollars."
While a total of 880 Proof examples were reported, fewer than half of these survive and a further half of those exhibit signs of handling. Just over 200 coins are estimated in grades of Proof-60 or higher, but many of these grade only Proof-62 or lower due to hairlines and other distractions. The present Deep Cameo example is an absolutely exceptional specimen, fit for a top-tier PCGS Registry Set.
This Proof-63+ Deep Cameo (PCGS) 1895 Morgan dollar is being offered in our November 2020 Auction as part of the Monterrey Collection of U.S. Type Coins. The Monterrey Collection is a fresh, new-to-the-market collection that was assembled over the second half of the 20th century and held privately for decades. This spectacular cabinet is highlighted by a complete set of Proof Morgan dollars (previously housed uncertified in a Capital Plastics frame), as well as an array of iconic type coins and key-dates including an MCMVII High Relief double eagle, a 1799 Capped Bust Right $10, an 1856 Flying Eagle cent and numerous others. While many of these coins were submitted for grading for the first time in recent weeks, others are housed in Old Green PCGS and Old No-Line NGC holders that have long been unavailable to modern collectors. We certainly anticipate considerable excitement over the Monterrey Collection when it crosses the auction block in November! The deadline for submitting United States coins and paper money for this sale is September 14th.
