Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official ANA Auction of United States Paper Money will offer many highlights, including this newly discovered $5 Brown Back from the previously unreported Ishpeming National Bank. It is graded Fine 12 by PMG.
It is an astonishing discovery type from this Marquette County issuing bank. The Ishpeming National Bank was chartered on December 21, 1883, and issued just $65,380 during its existence, all of which were Brown Backs. The bank was liquidated on February 25, 1901, and as of 1910 just $640 was left outstanding on the bank. No notes for this bank are listed in Track and Price’s census and the book "National Bank Notes" by Don C. Kelly lists this bank as (UNREPORTED). This note is the first to come forward from this elusive bank. Although this note is well traveled, it is sure to draw spirited bidding from collectors seeking to cross this bank charter off their list, or for those seeking an exceedingly rare note from the Brown Back series. The signatures remain mostly dark and still legible given the condition. Surprisingly, this note was recently discovered in an old trunk on the West Coast, quite a distance from where it was first issued.
