Lot 11232 in our very first May Showcase Auction, offers a coin of underrated rarity and incredible value is found. Offered is a legendary strike rarity for the otherwise readily obtainable 1921 Morgan dollar. The finish is remarkably reflective overall, both in the fields and over the design elements, although the latter display a tinge of mint frost that imparts very modest cameo-like contrast. This outstanding finish is readily appreciable on surfaces that are bright, brilliant, and sparkling white. A minor planchet flaw in the left obverse field, off Liberty’s chin, is as made and serves as a useful identifier for provenance purposes; there are none but a few wispy handling marks that do not detract. It is fully struck with exceptional eye appeal.
From a gigantic mintage of 44,690,000, the 1921 Morgan dollar is typically known as one of the most common Morgans. With these deep prooflike surfaces, as certified by PCGS, this final year Morgan dollar issue is a major rarity. PCGS boasts a minuscule population of just eight pieces graded 64 or high with the DMPL designation and just 19 in total. We have not sold one through auction in any grade in more than 20 years, during which time numerous PL-designated examples passed through our sales. The signficance of this offering for advanced collectors or DMPL Morgan dollars cannot be overstated. Expect strong bidder competition when this coin crosses the auction block.
