On the Subject of Funny Town Names

Lot 6248 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction presents a Fr. 626 $10 Plain Back note from the First National Bank of Intercourse, Pennsylvania. The small community of Intercourse featured on this note, situated to the east of Lancaster, has long been the butt of many jokes. However, this was not the original name favored by this community, as until 1814 it was known as “Cross Keys” after a local tavern. Several theories speak to the selection of the name “Intercourse.” One suggests the name reflects that two major roadways crossed in the middle of town, while another speaks to a less suggestive interpretation of the word “Intercourse” rooted in a sense of community.

The First National Bank of Intercourse (Charter# 9216) was organized in 1908, and was one of hundreds of National Banks across Pennsylvania to issue National Bank Notes. The notes from this institution prominently feature the name “INTERCOURSE” in thick block letters below the bank title which draws the attention of viewers. While First National Bank of Intercourse notes aren’t rare in terms of overall survivors, the suggestive nature of the town’s name means they always command a substantial premium when compared to other banks that record similar numbers of survivors.

Featured in Session 6 of the November 2025 Showcase Auction, lot 6248 is graded Very Fine 30 by PMG and, along with the entire sale, is available for viewing and pre-sale bidding at StacksBowers.com. This lot carries an estimate of $2,500 to $3,500.
