I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time when I first spotted this beautiful Confederate note last June while attending the Baltimore show. It was being delivered for grading at the show and afterward I chatted with the owner/consignor telling him that this was the nicest example I had ever seen.
Lo and behold, I came to find out that it had been housed in a book about the Civil War for about 100 years until its discovery earlier this year. Being stored in this book likely saved it from further wear and tear. After additional discussions the family decided to consign this Confederate treasure to our November Showcase auction that was held last week. It was offered as lot 7059 with an estimate of $25,000 – $35,000. Bidders came out in full force Friday afternoon pushing this fresh to the market Confederate rarity to a near record price of $54,000.
As sometimes happens, a chance encounter at a show led to a very successful auction realization for our consignor. And the winning bidder has what is the second finest known Indian Princess with zero defects or problems.
