Though new discoveries in the field of numismatics are frequent, few match this item which came to us from a recent consignment. While it is similar in appearance to its counterparts issued through the early years of the 20th century, this Series of 1882 $5 Brown Back from the First National Bank of Greeley is both a new entry to the National Bank Note Census and the sole recorded example of its type known to survive.
In addition, below the right-facing portrait of President James A. Garfield is found the bank serial number which reads “1”. This indicates that it came from the first $5-$5-$5-$5 format sheet of $5 Brown Backs issued by the First National Bank of Greeley (Charter# 3178) around the time the bank organized early in 1884.
Light handling associated with storage can be observed. The penned signatures of Cashier B.D. Harper and President John M. Wallace are both neat and quite original. The distinctive coloration on the verso, responsible for the “Brown Back” moniker, remains distinct and lacks any signs of the fading or discoloration often encountered on representatives of the type.
Without a doubt, our offering of this note in the Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction presents a rare opportunity for collectors and especially those who specialize in National Banknotes from Colorado.
