The 1856 Proof Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is exceedingly rare and eminently desirable. There is quite possibly only two known specimens. One of the two known coins was in the Reimers, Newcomer, Boyd, "Memorable," Wolfson, and Ullmer collections.

The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the Louis E. Eliasberg United States Gold Coin Auction, where it sold for $24,200.
