There were approximately 30 Proof 1866 Liberty Head Quarter Eagles struck, although the distribution may have been a much smaller number; the known number of 1866 Proof quarter eagles today is somewhat less than half of the reported mintage figure. For the year of 1866, just 3,080 circulation strikes were produced, making the entire year a rarity, and the proof strike so much more so.
