1925-S had a voluminous production run of 3,776,500 pieces and were stored in bags for nearly a decade, then shipped off to be melted by the Treasury Department to find later storage as gold bricks in Fort Knox. A few hundred or so survive and thankfully for collectors, some examples are really nice. This is in complete opposition to the 1921 Philadelphia coins which are seldom found as nice and most barely make the Uncirculated grade level.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the January 2008 Americana Auction, where it realized $80,500.
