Only 8.9 million 1944-S Walking Liberty Half Dollars were struck, down from the 13.4 million pieces produced in San Francisco in 1943, and also lower than the 10.1 million-coin total achieved for the 1945-S. No 1944-S has been graded higher than MS-67 by PCGS; the Lulu Collection piece sold at Stack's Bowers Galleries is tied for finest certified at the top of the PCGS Population Report with only nine other grading events. Indeed, market offerings suggest a lower total of actual coins since a PCGS MS-67 has not sold at auction since 2005.
