Interestingly for an issue with a relatively limited mintage of 9.9 million pieces, the 1945-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar is one of the more frequently encountered Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" issues in Mint State. Hundreds of thousands of such coins are extant, and certified examples are quite available in grades up to and including MS-66. Any finer, however, and the conditionally rare nature of the 1945-D comes to the fore. At MS-68, in fact, this issue is virtually non-collectible, as there are only two graded at the apex of the PCGS Population Report.
