The 1946-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is the most plentiful San Francisco Mint Walking Liberty half dollar issue in Mint State. Clearly many examples were kept from entering circulation, certainly due to the relatively limited mintage of 3,724,000 pieces (although the 1946-S did not benefit from contemporary hoarding to the same extent as the 1946-D). Indeed, the 1946-D is more plentiful than the 1946-S, as are the 1941, 1942 and 1943. Such comparisons lose all meaning in the finest Mint State grades, however, for all Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" issues are rare in PCGS MS-67+, and the 1946-S is unknown any finer at this service.
