The Peace dollar in a lowered relief was struck continually from 1922 until 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935, at which time production ceased. The Denver mint reportedly struck around 316,000 Peace dollars dated 1964, but all were reported to have been destroyed. Rumors persist of a few survivors, but like the 1933 Double Eagle, if one were to surface, it would in all likelihood be seized by the government, so speculation will simply likely continue.
The Peace dollar series contains no real “stoppers” although there are “condition rarities”. Most “S” mint coins, and all 1927 and 1928 issues are quite costly in ultra-high grade (MS 66 and above). However, in MS 63 and MS 64, most are affordable. The only “key” in lower grades is the 1928, and the 1934-S is tougher in any mint state grade.
