In the Rarities Night session of our Spring Showcase Auction, we are honored to present this CMQ proof $2.50 gold rarity in lot 3118. This highly significant Proof Liberty Head quarter eagle rarity offers fantastic Gem Deep Cameo Proof quality. The devices are fully struck, with razor sharp detail to even the most intricate design elements. The softly frosted texture contrasts markedly with deeply mirrored reflectivity in the fields. Carefully and originally preserved, the smooth-looking surfaces are drenched in richly original deep orange-gold color. The beauty of this coin combined with the legendary rarity of the issue is sure to result in strong competition among advanced gold enthusiasts. Its provenance includes our (Stack’s) Theodore Ullmer Collection sale in 1974, Superior’s sale of the Ed Trompeter Collection in 1992, and Heritage’s sale of Dr. James Olsen Collection in 2013.
The mintage of the Proof 1862 quarter eagle is recorded as 35 pieces. Only a dozen or so examples exist in private hands, most of which spend years off the market in tightly held collections. The PCGS Population lists just one example, and the CAC Stickered Population contains just one in all grades in the Deep/Ultra Cameo category. Auction appearances of high-quality survivors are few and far between, and we suspect that the significance of the present offering will draw much attention.
