The 1943 bronze cent, or “1943 copper penny” is one of America’s most beloved numismatic rarities and we are pleased to present an 1943-S example in Rarities Night of the Spring 2026 Showcase Auction. Millions of Americans have experienced a moment when they dreamed of finding one of these treasures in pocket change. Very few did while the vast majority did not, but the success stories kept the dream alive for treasure hunters. These tales created and fueled a vast publicity campaign that has made the “1943 copper” one of the few U.S. Mint rarities that is as well known to non-collectors as it is to numismatists.
The history of the 1943 bronze cents begins with the United States Government’s classification of copper as a critical war material, most significantly for use in producing shell cases for artillery and other weapon systems. Steel cents were minted and distributed only when existing supplies of the earlier cents had been exhausted. This happened all too quickly, as the demand for cents during 1941-43 was seemingly insatiable. Recognizing the inadequacy of the zinc-coated steel composition for coinage, in 1944 the Mint reverted to bronze planchets for cent production, finding a ready supply in melted shell cases whose rounds had been expended on the battlefields of a global war. With a substantial output of cents and operating under wartime conditions, it is little wonder that the Mint’s quality control procedures failed at times, and unintentional rarities were produced and distributed alongside the normal steel cents.
The 1943-S offered here is one of the finest, as well as among the best-known examples of this prized rarity. It is the only 1943 bronze cent from any of the three issuing mints to have received Gold CAC approval; indeed, with plenty of softly frosted luster remaining on both sides, it is a top-tier Choice About Uncirculated coin. Nearly complete strike detail remains and there is only trivial friction – confirmation that the AU-55 grade from PCGS is very conservative. The surfaces are bathed in warm chocolate-brown patina with a hint of autumn-orange, both sides also exhibit subtle lilac-blue and pale pink undertones to further enhance the eye appeal. The offering of any 1943 bronze cent is always greeted with great enthusiasm, and this thoroughly PQ and visually appealing Choice AU specimen from the San Francisco Mint will surely see spirited bidding.
