This week I have a wonderful story to share about a fantastic collection and a very satisfied client!
Earlier this week, I had an appointment set up to evaluate a collection from someone who had inherited a very interesting group of coins from his grandfather. The client was a bit uneasy as he is personally not a numismatist and had never dealt with anything like this before. He had very understandable concerns about security and transparency. I made sure to provide the ultimate Philly Stack’s Bowers Galleries experience from start to finish. First, we set up secure onsite parking with direct internal access to our gallery. Once we were comfortably set up in our conference room, he told me about a negative experience he had when he presented this collection to a local dealer. From there, I reviewed everything he had and explained the true numismatic value of the great rarities he had. These included a 1797 half dollar and a Gobrecht dollar.
I provided current market estimates and advised him that popular rarities such as these are best sold through auction to maximize their value. He was quite excited about this opportunity, and the result was a consignment of over 100 pieces to our 2025 auctions. I then reviewed the lower value and more generic material in the collection and provided him with a strong outright purchase offer as these pieces did not make sense for auction. He was thrilled with the dollar figure as it was immensely higher than the previous offer he had received. I look forward to staying in touch with him moving forward with auction updates. The icing on the cake with this deal was that we will be naming the collection after his grandfather in our catalogs as a tribute to a truly passionate collector.
