Rare Straits Settlements Notes Offered at NYINC

We are excited to remind you that both the Live and Internet Sessions of our upcoming New York International Numismatic Convention Auction are available on our website. The official sale will take place on January 11th, 2019, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time in the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street in New York City. Lots 30354 and 30355, each contain a scarce 100 Dollar note from the Straits Settlements British Administration.

Lot 30354 is an extremely scarce 1916 date, and early issue Pick 5 in a PMG Very Fine 20 Net, Stained holder. Block B/1. It presents a design that is very scarce in any state of preservation and with any date; when dated 1916 it is simply rare. The note is in a large format and displays an open design, with a profile vignette of KGV at top center and prowling tiger below. Four large serial numbers are at the corners along with printed date and signatures. Twin watermark fields have elephants facing opposite directions. This is only the second time we have handled this date and the present example is finer than that we previously offered. That other note was sold in our August 2017 Hong Kong sale where it ultimately sold for $38,240 against a $20,000 to $25,000 estimate. PMG has graded just six notes on the catalog number and none of them over the Very Fine grade range. Here is a great opportunity to secure this rare type and a note that will be a highlight in any collection.

The following lot is a 1925-dated 100 Dollar note from a later issue, but carrying the earlier, and more difficult date from that issue. It’s found in a PMG Very Fine 30 Net, Retouched holder. This note features another design that is highly difficult to find in any state of preservation. It is one of few we can recall handling in recent memory. The note displays a small profile vignette of KGV at top center and prowling tiger below, similar to the prior mentioned lot. Four large serial numbers are at the corners along with printed date and signatures. The ink is attractive throughout with pleasing detail considering the grade; there are only a few areas of rust mostly at the blank back. Largely watermarked paper with elephants at left and right watermark fields with denomination and "Straits Settlements," also appearing.
