In our June Showcase Auction, we are pleased to feature a 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln cent in lovely choice Mint State condition. Lot 1395 offers an attractive, premium quality example of this iconic 20th century rarity. The surfaces retain more than 50% of the mint color in a vivid pinkish-orange hue, and both sides have subtle olive-brown iridescence that is a bit more pronounced on the obverse. The strike is sharp, the texture frosty, and both sides reveal only trivial marks and faint spots appropriate for the assigned grade. This coin has received both CMQ and CAC approval stemming from its choice surface quality and impressive amount of its original red color that remains. This specimen is the only Red-Brown certified piece that has earned a CAC sticker.
The 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse is an extremely desirable variety, having an estimated population of 50 to 60 pieces based on combined certification service statistics. Other sources such as PCGS CoinFacts state that just 30 coins survive today, further substantiating its rarity. The doubling on this variety is very dramatic, adding to its desirability. The present offering represents a significant bidding opportunity to acquire a coin that will serve as a highlight in an advanced Lincoln cent collection.
