The saga of the treasure ship S.S. Central America is well known among collectors of United States gold coins. The recovery of the massive quantities of gold coins and ingots created quite the stir at the turn of the 21st century when the coins and bars first made their appearance in the marketplace. A few years ago, another tranche of coins came to market via the California Gold Marketing Group. These coins were certified by PCGS in an oversized holder with a pinch of California gold dust.
Among the hundreds of double eagles that came to market was a handful of truly superb examples, including one that will be featured in our June 2026 Showcase Auction. Graded MS-67 by PCGS and awarded a green CAC sticker, this marvelous coin ranks among the finest of all Type I double eagles of any date. Its intense luster, crisp strike, and satiny smooth surfaces are a delight to behold, made all the more impressive when you consider this coin spent a century and a half on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean off the Carolina coast.
This exceptional coin is one of the highlights of our June Showcase Auction. We are still accepting consignments to this event, so if you have any coins you are interested in selling, now is a great time as the market continues to enjoy robust strength. Take advantage of these great market conditions and get top dollar for your coins in our auctions.
