The 1911-D $10 is among the rarest issues in this very popular series. With a low original mintage of 30,100, the date started out scarce. Many are theorized to have been kept in storage in government vaults only to be melted down in the late 1930s. Only a small number of Mint State coins are known, and until the James A. Stack, Sr. coin was graded, neither service graded an example finer than MS-65. While a few dates are rarer in an absolute sense, the 1911-D is the pinnacle of condition rarity in the series. Graded MS-66 by PCGS and approved by CAC, this coin stands as the single finest certified!

I had a chance to look at this coin in hand during lot viewing in our New York City office this week, and it is truly a “WOW” coin! Even if you are not a specialist in the series, you can tell this coin is special. Sharply stuck and boldly lustrous, this ultra rare top pop condition rarity has incredible eye appeal. Standing up to close scrutiny with a powerful glass, the James A. Stack 1911-D is essentially flawless. Over the years, I have handled some incredible $10 Indians, and this piece is distinct as one of the finest of any date in the 1908-1933 series! If you are working on the finest of sets, this coin should definitely be on your radar. It will attract incredibly fierce bidding, and no doubt will set a record price for any 1911-D $10 sold in auction.
