The Pentakaidekadrachm – The Largest Silver Coin of Ancient Egypt

Our January 2025 Showcase auction—held in conjunction with the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC)—will feature additional offerings from the expansive collection of S. P. Rutherford, building upon the treasures previously offered in the August 2024 sale. This impressive collection is not limited to Latin American rarities, as a sizable array of wonderful ancient coins are present as well. One highlight is an iconic large-format silver issue—the Pentakaidekadrachm. Weighing nearly 52 grams, it towered above the much more commonly-encountered silver denominations of its era, such as the Drachm and Tetradrachm. As its name would suggest (penta = five, kai = and, deka = ten), this massive argent issue was the equivalent of 15 Drachms and features the veiled and draped bust of Berenike II on its obverse (the wife and co-regent of Ptolemy III, her half-cousin). The reverse displays a cornucopia between two laureate pileoi (the caps worn by the Gemini twins, Castor and Pollux). Already a very rare type, this example from the Rutherford Collection offers an elevated state of preservation, garnering an AU designation from NGC. Given its immense size and captivating nature, it should generate a fair degree of crossover appeal from collectors of more modern coinage, such as those who hotly pursue world crowns. This, along with countless other ancient and world offerings from the Rutherford Collection, will be available for bidding in the coming weeks on our website.
