Among the many highlights of the Spring 2025 Showcase Auction is an item that will thrill even the most seasoned of collectors. To say lot 20130 is a rare opportunity would be a major understatement as notes issued under the authority of the Second Continental Congress are seldom encountered uncut.
When uncut strips or blocks of Continental notes are encountered, most are unsightly. By comparison this sheet offers a complete block of (16) notes in a double-pane arrangement and represents the emission of February 17, 1776, the first of four to be made during the year 1776.
The condition of this item is utterly remarkable, and it has been graded Choice About Uncirculated 58 by PMG. The borders of the sheet are full and unmarred by efforts to trim them down to “improve” eye appeal, while the penned signatures of William Coats and John Williams (the latter a member of the Continental Congress) offer a degree of contrast against the balance of the design elements, which include the so-called “Nature Prints” originally devised by Benjamin Franklin during his historic partnership with David Hall.
A number of small holes are seen but speak to the circumstances of how this sheet managed to survive and evaded falling victim to time and the elements. These holes can be traced to a past binding that kept this sheet ensconced between protective covers that helped preserve this item in a remarkable and uncommon quality that is bound to impress even the most discerning of specialists.
This item will be offered as lot 20130 (Session 6) and is currently available for viewing and presale bidding at StacksBowers.com before it crosses the auction block on April 3, 2025.
