Unique 1670-A Double de l’Amerique from the Martin Collection Sells for $504,000

Against an estimate of $300,000, the only known 1670-A Double de I’Amerique has sold for a price of $504,000 as lot 1029 in our sale of the Sydney F. Martin Collection Part II. The provenance of this important French Colonial coin includes such illustrious cabinets as those built by Virgil Brand, Wayte Raymond, John J. Ford, Jr., Emery May Norweb, and Anthony Terranova. Now, a new owner can proudly add their name to this historic list. The 1670-A Double de I’Amerique’s claim to fame is being the first coin to feature the word “America.”
