IRVINE, Calif. – An important and unique offering of Benjamin Franklin-related currencies and financial items will be a highlight of the Stack’s Bowers Galleries paper money session at the Official ANA World’s Fair of Money auction to be held Wednesday evening, August 17, 2011, in Chicago. Franklin’s impact upon security printing, currency, and the early financing of America is the focus of this museum caliber collection. The Poor Richard’s Collection contains historic Franklin imprinted notes as early as 1739, the finest known 1775 Marbled Border 420 Continental Currency note, high grade “Fugio” emblem Continental Notes, and culminates with an extraordinary 1781 United States loan certificate. The loan certificate was part of the foundation of the early American Republic’s financing and was created in Paris by Franklin using special marbled color edged paper. It was hand accomplished by Franklin and signed boldly by him as the authorized representative of the newly formed United States of America. This certificate type is the first offering of its kind in a numismatic auction sales event. Even the illustrious Ford-Boyd colonial holdings did not contain an example of this majestic Franklin-signed and created certificate.

The focus will be on one of just two examples known to us of the 1975-S Proof Roosevelt dime lacking the S mintmark. The presently offered coin was purchased in February 1979 by dealer Fred Vollmer, a professional who specialized in Proof coins and sets and appreciated the unique opportunity. In 1980 Vollmer sold it to the present consignor as part of a proof set. The set with the dime rarity has been off the market for 31 years! The entire proof set has been recently certified by PCGS, the coins individually graded and encapsulated. The 1975 No S dime has been certified Proof-68 by PCGS. IRVINE, Calif. – Bowers and Merena Auctions, America's leading rare coin and currency auction house, conducted an auction of exceptional international banknotes in New York City on October 27-28, 2008, compiled of two premier collections, “The East Bay Collection of International Banknotes” and “The Eduard Kann Chinese Banknote Collection.” Consisting of more than 2,100 total lots, the auction realized $1,119,585. It was held at the Hilton Times Square, with live auction simulcasts in Hong Kong and Germany. The auction was spearheaded by Bowers and Merena in conjunction with sister companies John Bull Auctions, Ltd., of Hong Kong, and Heinrich Köhler Auktionshaus of Germany.
