The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Baltimore Currency Auction Realizes Over $11 Million Official Whitman Expo Auction Realizes a Total of Nearly $24 Million

The Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo, presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries, saw total sales that exceeded $11.1 million. Part III of the Joel R. Anderson Collection realized over $8.6 million, while the Caine Collection of Federal Proofs and Essays, Part I, brought over a million dollars.

Over $12.7 Million in U.S. Coins Sold in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries October 2018 Baltimore Auction Official Whitman Expo Auction Realizes a Total of Nearly $24 Million

With over $23.9 million in total prices realized, including $12.7 million in United States coins, the Stack's Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo was a successful conclusion to the firm's 2018 showcase auction season. Highlighted by the Archangel Collection of Colonial and 1792 Coinage, the sale featured a parade of exceptional rarities, many of which had been off the market for decades prior to the Baltimore event. All prices listed include the 20% buyer's fee.

Stacks Bowers Galleries Joel. R. Anderson Collection Part III Auction Realizes Over $8.6 Million 1890 $1,000 Grand Watermelon Note Brings Over $2 Million

Stacks Bowers Galleries October 25 offering of Part III of the Joel R. Anderson Collection of United States Paper Money achieved $8,619,240 in the firms Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo in Baltimore.  Among the many rarities featured in the catalog, the highlight was the finest known 1890 $1,000 Grand Watermelon Treasury Note which realized over $2 million. With an average lot price of nearly $160,000, Part III brings the total to date for the Joel R. Anderson Collection to over $26 million, with one more offering planned for February 2019 in Baltimore.

Stack's Bowers Galleries' August 14-16 Official Currency Auction of the ANA World's Fair of Money was a great success, with many items exceeding estimate on their way to new homes. Two name collections,  Part II of the Joel R. Anderson Collection of United States Paper Money and Part I of the John E. Herzog Collection of United States Treasury Bonds attracted intense interest, as well as enthusiastic bidding. In all, the paper money portion of the firm's Philadelphia auction realized $12,294,094.

Nearly 5,000 United States coin lots and an incomparable selection of historic rarities were offered in the firm's summer 2018 sale and were met with strong enthusiasm from collectors of every segment. Over $21.1 million in U.S. coins were sold, including the record-breaking $4.5 million auction sale of the finest known 1913 Liberty Head nickel. This event demonstrates continued strength in nearly every segment of the U.S. coin market and points to Stack's Bowers Galleries as a leader in numismatic auctions. 

Finest Known 1913 Liberty Head Nickel Realizes Record-Breaking Price of Over $4.5 Million at the Stacks Bowers Galleries Rarities Night Auction

Legendary numismatic auction firm Stacks Bowers Galleries realized another record breaking price when it sold the rarest and most valuable U.S. nickel at their official auction of the ANA Worlds Fair of Money in Philadelphia. In front of a standing-room only crowd with auctioneer Melissa Karstedt at the podium, the finest known 1913 Liberty Head nickel brought $4,560,000, becoming one of the five most valuable coins sold at auction. In addition, it now ranks as the most valuable non-precious metal coin ever sold. The winning bid was placed by Laura Sperber, partner in Legend Numismatics.

Stack's Bowers and Ponterio is pleased to announce the results of their August 2018 Hong Kong Showcase Auction of Chinese Coins, Foreign Coins and Paper Money. Once again the semi-annual sale located at the Mira Hotel attracted collectors, dealers and enthusiasts from around the globe. Stack's Bowers Galleries' August 16 offering of Part II of the Joel R. Anderson Collection of United States Paper Money in Philadelphia, achieved nearly $10 million as a room full of enthusiasts vied with online bidders to take home unique, extremely rare and finest known pieces, as well as type notes in incredible condition.  In all, the 70 lots realized $9,652,860, with two notes bringing over $1 million each and well over a quarter of the lots crossing the $100,000 mark.
