Small Size Type Notes Highlighted in the Stacks Bowers Galleries July Baltimore Currency Auction

Stack's Bowers Galleries upcoming Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectible Summer Expo will feature a number of important United States small size currency offerings. Among the more than 1,200 lots of currency offered in the auction is an impressive Fr. 1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG and pedigreed to The Collection of Doug Kaselitz. The small size rarity, one of just over 50 known, is estimated to bring $25,000 to $35,000.

Extremely Rare Proof 1859 Quarter Eagle with the New Reverse Among Highlights of the Rubin Family Collection to be sold at the Stacks Bowers Galleries Official ANA Sale in August

Stacks Bowers Galleries is pleased to present the Rubin Family Collection as part of our Official Auction in conjunction with the ANA Worlds Fair of Money to be held in Rosemont, Illinois in August of this year. This small collection of gold, silver and copper coins includes the finest of three known Proof 1859 quarter eagles with the New Reverse hub style. The Rubin Collection example is graded Proof-65 Deep Cameo by PCGS, and is pedigreed to the famous and historic Amon G. Carter, Jr. Collection. Aside from being the finest New Reverse 1859 Proof quarter eagle, it is arguably the second or third finest certified quarter eagle of the date, the finest being the Harry Bass coin that is graded by PCGS as a Proof-66. 

First D. Brent Pogue Collection Sale Rewrites Record Book

No fewer than 16 major price records were breached during the first offering of coins from the D. Brent Pogue Collection, sold in New York City on May 19 by Stacks Bowers Galleries in partnership with Sothebys. While the majority of coins brought record prices for their PCGS grade designation and variety, more than a dozen set new standards for any example of the date or major variety.

Collectors bid over $25 million to purchase just 128 coins Tuesday night at the sale of the D. Brent Pogue Collection, presented by Stacks Bowers Galleries and Sothebys in New York City. The single finest known example of the 1808 quarter eagle, graded MS-65 (PCGS), realized $2.35 million, a new world record for any coin of the quarter eagle denomination. It also became the most valuable 19th century U.S. gold coin ever sold at auction.

A nearly forgotten piece of history from the early United States space program returns to the fore with the recent consignment to auction of a rare American coin that traveled in space! The coin, a rare 1793 one-cent piece, also happens to have been made the first year that the United States Mint produced coins in large numbers for general circulation, so it is a particularly historic piece.

Graded and encapsulated by the Professional Coin Grading Service as Proof-69, this example last sold in the June 2012 Stacks Bowers Baltimore sale for $2,760,000.

Nearly $9 Million of Rare Asian Coins Hammer at Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio April 2015 Hong Kong Auction Sale
Anchored by the W & B Capital Collection, the April 2015 Stacks Bowers and Ponterio Hong Kong auction was another major success for the firm. Bidders actively competed for coins, banknotes, medals, and other Asian numismatic items offered. The total price realized of $8,983,418 exceeded the high end estimate by $1,640,000 (all prices include the 19.5% buyers premium).

Thousands of coins, medals, and banknotes crossed the block during the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore, March 26 and 27. The offering, presented in three catalogs, featured some of the most noteworthy colonial era numismatic items ever offered and one of the most extensive offerings of small-sized, large denomination notes to cross the block. Bidding participation came from all sources, including from the floor, where sometimes there was a standing-room-only crowd. When all was said and done, nearly $18.7 million crossed the auction block, one of the largest Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo auctions to date!

Stacks Bowers Galleries March Baltimore Currency Auction Totals Nearly $4.7 Million!

The Stacks Bowers Galleries official currency auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo came to a close on Monday with the conclusion of the live Internet only session. In all the March currency auction realized $4.69 million in sales with the 17.5% buyers premium included. Director of Currency Auctions Peter Treglia stated: We were very happy with the results of the sale. I thought that prices were strong in categories across the board and that bidders were eager for the material that we had to offer.
